Corrina Hewat: Song of Oak & Ivy with Alastair Savage & Alice Allen

Detaljer

Song of Oak & Ivy - Corrina Hewat’s ten-harp suite featuring acoustic, electric and wire-strung harps – intensely encapsulates, in four movements, the diverse energies of the contemporary Scottish harp revival. For this special performance celebrating the release of the album, Dave Milligan on piano joins forces again with Corrina, Mary Macmaster, Wendy Stewart, Heather Downie, Tristan Le Govic, and Bill Taylor in their own alchemy of sound. Based loosely on the ‘The Oak tree and the Ivy’, a short story by Eugene Field, published in his A Little Book of Profitable Tales in 1891.

The symbiotic nature of the Ivy and Oak’s relationship is explored in a musical alchemy, the listener invited into a symphony of strings ; tendrils of jigs, strathspeys of oak, tales from the four corners of the earth, electric storms and murky depths, airs and reels of love and farewell. On the stage, electro, acoustic and wire harps interweave with piano to allow the listener to hear and feel the beauty in the chaotic nature of life.

Fiddler Alastair Savage and cellist Alice Allen are two of Scotland’s most versatile instrumentalists with their 2024 double album ‘Where The Good Ship Lands’ representing a seven year collaboration celebrating the diverse strands of their work. Rooted in their shared commitment to the 18th century golden age of Niel Gow and Robert Burns, the duo’s first combined Celtic Connections appearance will also feature Alastair’s soulful compositions reflecting his Ayrshire roots as well as the timeless melodies of James Scott Skinner showcasing Alice’s Aberdeenshire heartland.
