The Burford Singers present:
Highlights from the Romantics
We present three well known and one lesser known work associated with the period of the 19th century, commonly referred to as the Romantic era. Romantic music is known for its emotional expressiveness, dramatic harmonies, and soaring melodies.
Brahms: Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) - one of the shortest, but best, of Brahms' choral works.
Felix Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture - inspired by one of Mendelssohn's trips to the British Isles, specifically an excursion to the Scottish island of Staffa, also known as Fingal's Cave
Fanny Hensel (ne Mendelssohn): Hiob (Job) - Fanny Hensel (Felix Mendelssohn's sister) composed this cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra shortly after her marriage and birth of her son. Most of her music was unpublished in her lifetime, but from the 1980s onwards there has been renewed interest in her works.
Haydn: Harmoniemesse - Composed and performed for the first time in 1802, when Haydn was 70 years old. This great mass demonstrates that, at the end of his life, the composer was still developing his stylistic trend from the classical to the romantic period.
