This special concert celebrates the 150th birthday of Gustav Holst, one of Cheltenham’s favourite sons. Born in Clarence Street in 1874, Holst is best known for The Planets, but tonight’s programme draws together strands from throughout his life. We begin with his sprightly, rhythmic Fugal Overture and the witty ballet music from his comic work The Perfect Fool, and the concert finishes with A London Symphony, a grand and loving portrait of London (where Holst spent much of his life) by Holst’s great friend – also born in Gloucestershire – Ralph Vaughan Williams.
In his early years, Holst was a great admirer of Grieg (whose use of folksongs Holst later followed in England). We are delighted to be joined by superstar international concert pianist Sir Stephen Hough for Grieg’s evergreen Piano Concerto.
