In the Tradition brings together a powerful line up of artists for Celtic Connections 2025, each breathing new life into traditional music.
The Madeleine Stewart Trio, featuring fiddle, piano, and bodhran, delivers spirited tunes that bridge Madeleine’s New Hampshire upbringing with her adopted Glasgow. Alongside, Mairi McGillivray, a Gaelic singer from Islay, brings the heart of Scottish island culture, backed by fiddler Isla Callister and guitarist Sean Gray. Their harmonies celebrate the beauty and power of Gaelic song.
Fiddle-accordion duo Roo & Neil fuse classical, jazz, and Scottish folk in soulful pieces inspired by nature and community, while Ross Couper and Tom Oakes captivate with fiddle and guitar-driven melodies that are simple yet exhilarating. Rounding out the concert, LÉDA combines Irish and Shetland influences in a mesmerizing harp, fiddle, and piano duo, blending new compositions with a fresh twist on folk.
Also joining "In the Tradition" are several more exceptional acts. Alana, Aoife agus Caitlin showcase Gaelic, Scots, and English songs inspired by the Highlands and Islands, weaving Alana MacInnes’ powerful piping with dynamic accompaniment from Armagh's Aoife Smyth and Colonsay's Caitlin McNeill. Vocalist Ellie Beaton, known for her love of North-East Scotland’s Bothy Ballads, joins with guitarist Luc McNally, whose warm and expressive style brings life to their traditional repertoire. Finally, celebrated musicians Eryn Rae and Michael Biggins add their award-winning fiddle and piano skills, blending Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian influences with infectious energy. This expanded line up deepens the celebration of tradition and creativity.
Together, these artists paint a vivid musical tapestry, showcasing the best of Scotland’s traditional music talent, with musical director Anna Massie and house band.
