Still Lives explores the enduring nature of the still life genre throughout art history, from post-impressionist art and surrealism to British modernism and contemporary art.
The exhibition reflects upon the inspiration artists have continually found in everyday objects: from an interest in colour and form, to a desire to capture their temporariness. While the still life genre is traditionally associated with painting, Still Lives features works from a range of mediums including sculpture, photography, ceramics, painting and works-on-paper.
Still Lives includes three of the oldest artworks in Wakefield’s art collection by renowned Dutch masters that date back to the seventeenth century alongside contemporary sculptures that use incongruous arrangements of familiar objects to create scenes that hover between the strangely ordinary and the extraordinary.
