The Town’s Symphony Orchestra is delighted to be back in the Play House to perform an exciting programme of intergalactic film music and Romantic classics for a truly ‘out of this world’ concert experience.John Williams is probably the best known of all film composers and his score for Star Wars is one of his greatest, making full use of the orchestra’s resources as we travel between the galaxies. The space travel continues with music from the classic science fiction TV series, Star Trek, before settling in our own galaxy as we visit the planets Jupiter and Mars in Holst’s striking depictions of those celestial bodies. Humanity’s exploration beyond our world and its inherent dangers were brought in to sharp focus with the launch and near disaster of the Apollo 13 space mission, and James Horner’s music for the subsequent movie reveals his genius in both conception and execution with a score which inspires and rouses, yet can also frighten. Our programme concludes with a great Romantic favourite, voted for by the orchestra’s members. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony is full of rich melody and sweeping emotion and it is no surprise that this is a favourite of audience and performers alike.
