The Friends Of Perth & Kinross Archive: The Story Of Perthshire Postcards

In this talk, David Robertson will tell how the idea of the picture postcard came about in the final years of the 19th century and how the postcard industry flourished in the years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War. At this time, picture postcards were being sent in vast numbers, being used by the population for day-to-day communications, and even generating a remarkable collecting craze. The talk will consider how the postcard business operated, both nationally and locally, and will explore some of the many designs and themes which publishers featured in their cards. It will be fully illustrated with slides showing examples of postcards from around Perth and across the county.

Who are the Friends of The Archive?

The Friends group was started in 2000 by Archive users who wanted to know more about the records that make up our history and culture. They also realised they could help make the records more accessible and generally support the work of the Archive staff through projects and activities.
