Who is John Smeaton and what is Smeaton300? John Smeaton is the UK’s father of civil engineering and is famous for his work and its positive impact on society – he helped prevent the London Bridge from falling down and designed the Eddystone Lighthouse! If Smeaton were alive today, it's likely that the challenge of a sustainable future would be central to his work. ‘We Are Such Things As Dreams Are Made’ asks the question: ‘If we found ourselves stranded on an unspoilt island, could we live in harmony with our surroundings?’
Smeaton 300 is a creative programme from arts organisation Foxglove, working with artists and scientists inspired by the work of the UK's first civil engineer – John Smeaton. John Smeaton was born in Leeds in 1724 and dedicated his life to developing ways of working for the public good.
This year, the University of Leeds' Cultural Institute and School of Civil Engineeting commemorate the 300th anniversary of his birth through a series of curated events.
What is the theme this year? This years’ project is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Tempest, the global climate crisis and the 300th anniversary of the father of civil engineering, Leeds born John Smeaton and asks the question ‘can we live together in the garden without destroying the flowers?
