Detaljer

One of the most significant figures in the post-impressionist movement, Paul Gauguin is both celebrated for his art and criticised for his personal morality. His depiction of non-Western subjects challenged neoclassical ideals of beauty, but draws accusations of colonial exploitation.

Inspired by the recent discovery of a 213-page handwritten manuscript, Sue Prideaux sets out to re-examine Gauguin's legacy and confront his controversies with her Baillie Gifford Prize-shortlisted book, 'Wild Thing: A Life of Paul Gauguin'. Joined onstage by his great granddaughter, the printmaker Mette Gauguin, Prideaux asks us to see the controversial figure of French art through a new lens, asking: can we separate art from the artist?
