This concert will be a melodious and joyful collaboration between our auditioned choir, the very talented choir of St George's Windsor, and the professional Chameleon Orchestra, ably conducted by our MD George de Voil.
Wokingham Choral Society will start by singing two anthems by Purcell: "O Sing unto the Lord", and "Jehova quam multi sunt hostes mei". Henry Purcell is generally considered England's most important early music composer. The two anthems that we will perform are beautiful choral works based on Psalms 96 and 3.
The Choir of St George's School, Windsor, will perform a beautiful suite of short pieces by 20th/21st century British composers: Michael Head - "The little road to Bethlehem"; John Rutter - "What sweeter music"; Errollyn Wallen - "Peace on earth"; Benjamin Britten - "This little babe" and David Bednall - "Make we merry"
Then both choirs will come together for the striking Britten: "St Nicolas" Saint Nicolas was Britten's first work for amateur musicians. It tells the story of the legendary life of Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, Lycia, in a dramatic sequence of events, including a story about some pickled boys!. Nicholas's habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the folklore of Santa Claus ('Saint Nick'). This choral work is fun to sing and will definitely be fun to hear.
