Forty years ago, David Ireson and Phyl Swindlehurst were involved in a production of Amahl and the Night Visitors at St Albans Cathedral which led to their setting up St Albans Chamber Opera the following year. We celebrate this anniversary with four fully-staged performances of Gian-Carlo Menotti's heartwarming one act opera for Christmas, set in the round at the beautifully restored St Peter's Church, St Albans.
The opera tells the story of a disabled shepherd boy Amahl, who offers his crutch as a present to the Christ child, is healed and joins the Three Kings on their way to Bethlehem.
