Barry Le Va: In a State of Flux

American artist Barry Le Va (1941–2021) was a key figure in process and post-minimalist art in the 1960s and 1970s. Using materials such as felt, ball-bearings, powder and glass, he created work that explored the actions by which something can be changed from one state to another. This exhibition is the first retrospective since his death, and, as such, presents a challenge for an institution, installing works that rely so much on the artist’s process and use of improvisation. A direct link with Le Va’s way of thinking is provided through the drawings in the exhibition – some of which stand alone, and some of which are in dialogue with sculptural works on display.
