BCA AGM & the Last 5 Miles of Basingstoke Canal

This activity is completed or marked as expired

Details

A free talk by local historian Roger Cansdale. . As many readers will know, The Basingstoke Canal was restored between 1977 and 1991, except for the last 5 miles leading into its namesake town due to the collapse of the tunnel at Greywell. The last boat left Basingstoke in 1910 and over the following decades, much of the last 5 miles of the Canal was abandoned and sold off. Returning the Canal as a navigation back into Basingstoke is beset with insuperable difficulties, it remains the Society's aspiration to re-establish the route of this lost section as close as possible with a footpath and cycleway.
