BE MY BABY By Amanda Whittington Directed by Quina Chapman

Set in a church-run Mother and Baby Home in 1964 in the North of England, Be My Baby follows the fortunes of Mary Adams, aged 19 and seven months pregnant. Forcibly sent away by a mother intent on keeping up appearances, Mary has to cope with both the shame of an unmarried pregnancy and with the dawning realisation that she will have to give the baby up for adoption whether she likes it or not. Despite this, and an overbearing matron, Mary meets new friends – Queenie, Norma and Dolores – and the girls’ courage and youthful effervescence shines through as they sing along to their favourite girl-group songs of the period. Be My Baby is funny and moving with dark themes uplifted by a 1960s girl pop soundtrack.
