THE DYLAN THOMAS JAZZ SUITE Sextet – (Arr. Jen Wilson) Sat 10th Aug 5-6.15pm Guildhall

Lineup: Margot Morgan (vocals), Cris Haines (trumpet/arr.), Deborah Glenister (saxes/clarinet). Dave Jones (piano), Paula Gardiner (double bass) Mark O'Connor (drums). This concert is dedicated to Jen Wilson (1944-2023), founder of Jazz Heritage Wales, Swansea. Margot Morgan leads in the recreation here of arrangements from the original album, recorded in 2003. She is joined by musicians who played on that first recording. It is an exciting and highly original piece of work. The Dylan Thomas: 12 Poems - for Jazz Ensemble by Jen Wilson, was chosen from “Dylan Thomas Collected Poems” published by JM Dent & Sons Ltd 1973. The original album was commissioned in 2003 by the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea to commemorate the 50th Anniversary his death Jen Wilson said - “ It was only when I happened to open his ‘Collected Poems ‘while seated at the piano that I made the connection into literary bebop, which had time signatures and free form verse patterns which did not ”. (Sept 2010) Jen found inspiration in Dylan Thomas, by the linguistic complexity, yet subtly musical and memorable lines of his poems. She likened the listening experience to that of a Thelonious Monk tune, where things can often sound wrong, but are actually perfectly right. Everything fits in place. It always works. A not to be missed concert.
