A grieving mother. A newsman looking for his story. A dog put on trial. Dog’s Case is a new drama by Miles Hitchens, considering the problem of grief – the insufficiency of words and narrative as they relate to our experiences. In late medieval France, one disastrous night at Bardin farm sees the family heir mauled to death by the hunting dog, Charlotte. Due to an oversight in French law, the dog is put on trial with a defence attorney who must attempt to account for her actions. The play moves between the different voices implicated in this disaster; their perspectives unfold in themselves like reversible prisms, the speakers ultimately failing to find the right terms for their grief.
