This small exhibition in our Landscapes and Lives 2 gallery, celebrates the 150th anniversary of Dundee Naturalists’ society. Throughout its life the society has had a connection with The McManus originally in the form of the Albert Institute.

The society was funded in 1874 to promote an interest in Science and technology in Dundee and its interests have developed and changed over the last 150 years in line with social changes.

Nearly 2500 natural history objects from the society as well as their library of over 700 textbooks and other ephemera have been donated to The McManus over the last century. Amongst the objects on display are examples of archaeology plants, birds, butterflies and moths and shells from around Dundee. We look at the development of the society in relation to wider events in Dundee and Scotland.

Throughout the twentieth century attitudes to wildlife and collecting have changed. Advances in technology have changed the way we can look at the natural world.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sundays 12:30pm-4:30pm.
