Details

In July 1564, Elizabeth Lowys from Gt. Waltham was sentenced to death for the offence of murder by witchcraft. She was to become the first person in England to be hanged under the new Elizabethan law. The trial was at Colchester! Unusually, she managed to delay her execution, which didn’t take place until March the following year. Join us on the 460th anniversary of her hanging as we explore the extraordinary series of events leading to this sad end. Using original court documents, John Worland has been able to establish how this case went so badly wrong for Elizabeth.

Suitable for ages 14+.
