LSO: Beethoven & Shostakovich

Details

Experience the power of two show-stopping symphonies, with insight from Sir Antonio Pappano and Nicola Benedetti.

Nicola Benedetti and Sir Antonio Pappano co-present this concert, introducing two monumental symphonies by composers reckoning with mortality and the world around them. Known for keeping the electricity at high voltage throughout’ (The Telegraph), Pappano conducts the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO).

With its iconic four-note motif, the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most instantly recognisable musical refrains in history. Sometimes known as the Symphony of Fate’, tension intensifies as the motif repeatedly returns, symbolising fate’s relentless knock at the door.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony follows, which premiered shortly after Joseph Stalin's death. Through its powerful portrayal of savagery and, ultimately, liberation, it grapples with the pursuit of truth under oppression.
