This sensational, award-winning young French string quartet offer a programme that frames a marvellous discovery between two much-loved classics. Dvořák’s late G major quartet is a big, warm, mellow work that reflects his happiness at being back home in his native Bohemia after his sojourn in America. Korngold, one of the last of the great Romantics, started life as an extraordinary Viennese prodigy and became best known as a celebrated Hollywood movie composer. His superb Third Quartet is a late piece that borrows ideas from some of his film scores. Haydn’s ‘joke’ comes at the very end of his delightful E flat quartet, and has caught many an audience out.
