Re-imagined: Vaughan Williams and the Tudor Revival

Details

In the twentieth century, we rediscovered the music of the sixteenth. This concert celebrates the rediscovery of the music of the great Tudor composers in the early twentieth century. Richard Terry at Westminster Cathedral not only revived the music of William Byrd, but commissioned new music inspired by the Renaissance greats. Vaughan Williams’ mighty a cappella Mass in G minor was one result, and would later feature in the 1953 Coronation Service. Also from this period was glorious music by Herbert Howells and the extraordinarily epic Mater ora filium by Arnold Bax. The fruits of this rediscovery continues today with a stunning ‘re-imagining’ of Byrd’s beloved motet Ave verum corpus .
