Details
Stevie’s life is stagnating, along with her dreams of being a writer. Hiding away on her mother’s sofa buried in her book, she is unable to face the realities of being an adult. Jane tries her best to support her daughter but her motherly imposition and opinion on everything, from her relationship, to what books she should be reading, to how she should go about “unblocking” herself, only cause Stevie to dive deeper into denial. At home, Stevie’s successful yet unsympathetic girlfriend, Anna, is not quite as understanding of Stevie’s creative struggles and is progressing quickly in her career, leaving Stevie behind. When Jane is diagnosed with breast cancer, Stevie is forced to wake up to her reality. ‘Ripped Out by the Stem’ explores navigating maternal illness and the effect that being confronted with mortality can have on our relationship with ourselves, our creativity and the people closest to us.
