Details

“Road” was written by Jim Cartwright and premiered in 1986 at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in London. The play is set in a deprived, working-class area of Lancashire during Margaret Thatcher’s government, a period marked by high unemployment in northern England. “Road” effectively portrays the desperation of people’s lives during this time, interwoven with humour.

The audience follows the narrator, Scullery, along the road, exploring different characters and their homes.

The play has received critical acclaim and was voted the 36th best play of the 20th century by the Royal National Theatre
