Handel: Saul
Conductor: Richard Pearce
Handel's dramatic oratorio Saul is a wonderfully colourful work that deserves to be as well-known as his ubiquitous Messiah . The story focuses on the first king of Israel's relationship with his eventual successor, David. It begins with David's triumph over Goliath, but the relationship turns from admiration to envy and hatred, ultimately leading to the downfall of the eponymous monarch.
The work has exciting and exotic choral and solo writing, featuring several instruments unusual for the time.
