WILLIAM GRANT STILL Symphony No.3, 'The Sunday Symphony'

Our May concert links Edward Elgar and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor with folk tales and Sunday spirituals. We start with one of Elgar's earliest published works, The Wand of Youth Suite No.2, in which he plays with the orchestra joyously and technically; Coleridge-Taylor's The Bamboula is an orchestral tour de force and was one of his most performed works during his lifetime. Adolphus Hailstork's Three Spirituals follows - based on popular spirituals and with a divine 2nd movement, Kumbaya. Our soloist, Haru Ogiwara, in the inaugural winner of the SSO/Yorkshire Wolds Music Foundation Concerto Competition and will perform Haydn's Cello Concerto in D. We close with the première of William Grant Still's Symphony No.3, 'The Sunday Symphony'. This was Grant Still's final symphony and he chooses to immerse the listener in a day in the life of a Sunday church-goer. This performance will conclude the cycle of William Grant Still's five symphonies which the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra has been the first orchestra in the UK to undertake.
