Details

Sarah Al-Sarraj is a British-Iraqi visual artist and cultural worker whose practice spans painting, comic books, moving-image, and immersive technologies. Her narrative-driven work employs speculation and fantasy to subvert global power structures and hierarchies, drawing on indigenous, queer, and Islamic metaphysical and liberatory thought.

Separated by Millennia is a newly commissioned body of work exploring notions of survival, deep time, ancestry and ecology. Inspired by research into wayfinding and orienteering devices indigenous to the Arabian peninsula, Al-Sarraj has created a series of oil paintings telling the story of a mythical tribe of temporal nomads who work to preserve biodiversity, travelling not through space but through time.

Through Separated by Millennia she explores how we are duty bound to those who came before us, and asks: how can we bring about intergenerational justice for those yet to come?
