Singet Dem Herrn: Bach Motets and Cello Suites

Details

Kingfisher Chorale are delighted to be joined by Cellist, Kinga Gáborjáni and Chamber Organist, Luke Green for a wonderful concert of beautiful choral and cello music by J.S. Bach.

The motets are fabulous small scale works written between 1720 and 1737 we think. They demonstrate a huge variety of music from sombre chorales and slow movements, to very virtuosic breath-taking musical lines that can inspire performers and listeners even after many experiences with them.

The cello suites are slightly earlier between 1717 and 1724. They are in many ways quite revolutionary. The cello was a relatively new instrument which is probably a shock to most people. It was only in the late 1500s that the cello started to sit along side the viola da gamba in ensembles and it was definitely seen as a bassline instruments. Any solos in that range were still given to the viola da gamba. The earliest solo music specifically written for the cello were in the 1680s. These suites are dance forms with beautiful flowing melodies, dance like rhythms and fantastic harmonies.

The programme includes:

  • Komm Jesu Komm
  • Fürchte Dich Nicht
  • Singet Dem Herrn
  • Jesu Meine Freude
  • Lobet Den Herrn
  • Bach cello suites
