In David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake, a scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. When eccentric but brilliant scientist Seth Brundle tests a teleportation machine on himself, a rogue housefly inside the device leads to horrifying results. Starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis , The Fly is one of the defining titles (along with fellow 1980s cult classics such as Videodrome and Naked Lunch ) that earned director David Cronenberg a reputation as the king of body horror. With themes including scientific hubris, genetic modification, teleportation, and a massive terrifying fly, what better movie to watch at the Science Museum on Halloween? This screening will be introduced by a talk on the cultural impact and the science of The Fly, by Science Museum Curatorial Lead and curator of the 2023 Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of Imagination exhibition, Dr Glyn Morgan.
