The Battle of Sheriffmuir fought on the 13th of November 1715 between the Hanoverian forces commanded by John Duke of Argyll and the Stuart army under the Earl of Mar, is notoriously the battle that the two sides both won and lost. With half of each army driven from the field by its opponent, a decision taken then by one of the two commanders converted the encounter from a draw into a defeat, leading to the failure of the first great Jacobite rising in Scotland. Had the decision gone the other way, a very different outcome might have followed.
In this lecture, Dr Roger Collins will explore the build up to the battle, its conduct and consequences, both actual and potential, and will be illustrated throughout.
