Details
Gartmore played its part in the Civil War, the Act of Union, the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, Slavery (and the Second Slavery), the Clearances, the Napoleonic Wars, Droving, the Jacobite Uprisings, the Pacification of the Highlands, the first Chinese Opium War, the Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland, the formation of the National Party of Scotland, and the defeat of Germany in WWII.
Gartmore, as we see it today, was born in 1725 - but it's a lot older than that! It was first recorded in 1598, but from new evidence discovered last year, we now know there were people here in the Bronze Age.... and, unbelievably, the village was part of the D-Day invasion of Europe.
And... there have been many famous faces here. Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Bontine Cunningham Graham (founder of the National Party of Scotland), Sir Charles Cayzer (shipping magnate), Admiral Sir John Jellicoe (commander of Britain's Grand Fleet), to name just a few!
This is Gartmore's 300th year, so join us for the first of a year long festival of seriously fantastic events.
