Details

William Gillies (1893–1973) was a prolific painter and an inspiring teacher who drew much of his artistic inspiration from the landscapes of Highland Perthshire and Angus. While his work is well-known, the story of his family origins in Kirriemuir and Dundee has only recently come to light. Join Andrew McPherson, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Edinburgh, as he delves into Gillies’ life and career. He will explore the personal and historical challenges Gillies faced, including the impact of the First World War, and how these experiences shaped the trajectory of his art throughout his life.
