Details

Born, bred and based in County Down, The Sands Family (Anne, Ben, Colum and Tommy) have been singing and playing music for as long as they can remember and maybe even a bit longer!

Since the days of growing up on a small family farm where neighbours were always welcome to share a verse or a tale when the day’s work was done, they have been aware that the power of music, song and story has a magical way of connecting people of all ages, places and persuasions, often turning strangers into friends.

With their unique mix of traditional and self-penned songs, they have played an important role in growing the world-wide interest in Irish folk and traditional music through performances, recordings and countless radio and television appearances.

Many of their songs have been translated and recorded by other artists, ‘There were Roses’, ‘Hug’ and ‘Lookin’ the Loan of a Spade’, to name but a few that have travelled far.

Between their musical journeys from Belfast to Berlin and Antrim to Auckland, The Sands Family often travelled to Bellaghy, in fondly remembered gatherings that enriched and inspired new songs and stories for the roads ahead.

Tommy, Ben, Colum and Anne are looking forward to taking a few new stories home with them in October after this very special return to meet friends old and new in the Seamus Heaney HomePlace.
