"Under Milk Wood is arguably Dylan Thomas's most famous and best-loved work. First performed in New York in 1953, this "Play for Voices" was described by the poet himself as "prose with blood pressure".
The play describes 24 hours in the life of Llareggub (read it backwards!), a small, Welsh, fictional seaside town. Although clearly Welsh, the people are universal; mad yet sane, scared but brave, funny and sad, full of hope and pathos. In essence, all of us. Under Milk Wood is a beautifully lyrical, bawdy, heartfelt, humorous and moving evocation of people and place: a Welsh Ulysses.
Dave Nelder's solo performance inhabits all 70-odd characters (some very odd!) as he leads us through their day, from the "darkest-before-dawn" dreamscapes to the alcohol-fuelled night; exploring the conflict between outward respectability and secret inner lives as the townsfolk go about their apparently humdrum lives."
