ZIOS Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra

Details

Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony, Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’… it’s just tune after classic tune (and a few surprises too) as Turkey’s leading orchestra makes a keenly-awaited return to London.

When Beethoven needed to unwind, he headed for the Austrian countryside – and the birdsong, brooks and shepherds’ songs of his ’Pastoral’ Symphony have made it one of the most beloved of classical masterpieces.

But that’s just one of many stories tonight, as Turkey’s flagship orchestra comes to Cadogan Hall under its newly-appointed artistic director Carlo Tenan. Hear Schubert wrestling with demons but creating pure beauty, in his tragic ‘Unfinished’ Symphony. Discover a firecracker of a showpiece from the great 20th-century Turkish composer Ferit Tüzün – East meets West, and it’s an absolute delight.

And enjoy the effortless charisma and glorious sound of cellist Pablo Ferrández in Saint-Saëns’ passionate concerto. Ferrández has been called ‘a star in the making’ – we’d say he’s already there.

‘Ferrández has the lot: technique, mettle, spirit, authority as a soloist, expressivity and charm’ (El Pais)
