The Burford Singers present:
Contemplation and Celebration
In preparation for the season of Advent, we present three well known works:
Gloria (RV489) - simply known as the Vivaldi Gloria because of its popularity, especially the opening movement.
Adagio for Strings in G minor - ascribed to 18th-century Venetian composer Tomaso Albinoni, although how much is actual Albinoni remains a matter of debate. Nevertheless it has become hugely popular in its form for string orchestra and organ solo.
John Rutter's setting of the Magnificat. The text of the canticle is taken from the Gospel of Luke (1:46–55) where it is spoken by Mary upon the occasion of her Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth. The extended composition in seven movements is "for soprano or mezzo-soprano solo, mixed choir, and orchestra (or chamber ensemble)", based on the Latin text, interspersed with "Of a Rose, a lovely Rose", an anonymous English poem on Marian themes.
